donRedding > 22.	Student’s Bible from the 1950s--Mel Allen

This Bible was the text for a class in the Old Testament, taught at DePauw University in the early 1950s. The teacher was Robert Montgomery, a superb Bible scholar and teacher. DePauw University is a liberal arts college which for years was under the auspices of the Methodist Church. Many Methodist ministers received their undergraduate degrees there before going to seminary.
Dr. Montgomery used to give “open book” Bible tests, and this Bible is well marked with notes and tabs. Students were encouraged to write anything in their Bibles that they thought would be helpful on the open book tests. Although I majored in Economics and History, this was one of the best classes I ever had.

This King James Version Bible was presented to the owner in 1955 and contains a presentation to her “for perfect attendance.”

donRedding > 25.	1830 Psalms and Hymns - Della Cowing

This much-used and well-worn book of Psalms and Hymns was printed in 1830. It was used and treasured by “Grandpa” Philo Synres, Father of ME. Bowers, who was an active Methodist layman on the Oklahoma frontier.
donRedding > 26.Family Bible c 1819--Ken Rice

This Bible, passed down to me by my aunt, was published in 1819 in Brattleborough, Vermont. Between the Old and New Testaments are several pages of family history. The earliest entry is for a birth in 1755.
At the beginning of the Bible is wording indicating it was “translated out of original tongues and with the former translations diligently compared and revised, with marginal notes and references.” It further goes on to say,
to which are added An Index: An Alphabetical Table of all the names in the Old and New Testaments, with their signlfcations; and what has never before been added, an account of the lives and martyrdom of the Apostles and Evangelists.”
donRedding > 27.	Early STUDY Bible-Joy Witherspoon

Students’ Bible with Marginal Notes and Footnotes. 1907, The Abingdon Press, New York/Chicago.
This is an early 20th century study Bible written by Orville J. Nave, D.D., LL.D. and Anna Semons Nave, M.L.A. It is King James Version with copious reading from the American Standard Revised Version, published by Oxford and Cambridge Universities.
This Bible is unique in that it is an early version of the Study Bibles of the later 20th and early 21’~ centuries.
donRedding > 28.	Hebrew-English Old Testament—L. Witherspoon

This is the standard Hebrew text HEBRAICA STUTTGARTENSIA with all necessary variant readings and major textual conjectures in footnotes. The NIV is the parallel text, providing a grammatically literal word-for-word translation with English phrases reading in normal left to right order for renderings of specific Hebrew words.
donRedding > 29.	Ancient Eastern Bible--L. Witherspoon

Identified as “Containing the Old and New Testaments translated from the Peshitta, the authorized Bible of the Church of the East.” This translation is used from the Mediterranean east into India where the Peshitta is still the Bible of preference. It is used by those who speak Arabic or, in rare instances, still speak Aramaic as the mother tongue.
donRedding > 30.	Jerusalem Bible---L Witherspoon

This is the English translation of La Bible de Jerusalem, which was originally published in France following decades of research and biblical scholarship. Scholars and serious students throughout all Christian fellowship use the Jerusalem Bible.
