donRedding > 30.	Jerusalem Bible---L Witherspoon

This is the English translation of La Bible de Jerusalem, which was originally published in France following decades of research and biblical scholarship. Scholars and serious students throughout all Christian fellowship use the Jerusalem Bible.
donRedding > 31.	Tyndale’s New Testament--L. Witherspoon

William Tyndale translated the New Testament from the original Greek. Early manuscripts were seized and publicly burned. In 1534 he managed to get it printed in Antwerp and smuggled copies back into England, giving the laity access to the word of God in print in English for the first time. It was the seed for subsequent translations, including the KJV.
donRedding > 32.	Yankee Bible--Mark I3arden

This Bible belonged to James W. Barden, my great-great-grandfather. He obtained it when he returned to his farm near Goldsboro after serving in the Civil War. When he arrived at his home, only to find the house along with all the farm buildings burned to the ground, he became quite angry and disturbed. To try to collect himself, he laid down under the only remaining structure left: a grape arbor, When he looked up, he noticed this Bible had been placed between a supporting timber and the vine. He took it down, opened it and discovered the name of Union soldier and the division in which he served. Barden was so angry, he took out his pocket knife and cut out the name and burned it. He then took the Bible as his own. Years later, he would recall the story and tell his children that he wished he had never cut the name out of the Bible. He said any soldier that would carry a Bible into battle deserved to have it returned. Unfortunately, he had no way of knowing who the soldier was and could not return the Bible. So today, it remains in the Barden family along with an interesting story about its history.
donRedding > 33.German Bible 1842..Loy Witherspoon

The first book to be printed was the Bible in German. Luther translated the Latin Vulgate into German for that first printed book. That translation into German formed the German language as well as began the process of giving the scriptures to the laity in their common language. To remind me of these significant events, I bought this Bible when I found it in a rare bookstore. Its value is sentimental not monetary
donRedding > 34.	Teach--Loy Witherspoon

The title of this translation is important for it reminds us that in mid-twentieth century the rabbis, in an effort to distinguish their scriptures from the Christians scriptures, both of which were entitled Bible, coined a word based upon the three parts of the Hebrew Bible: Torah (Law), Envoi’s (Prophets) and Kethubim (Writings). By taking the T from the Law and the N from the Prophets) which in the Jewish Bible include works which in the Christian Bible are listed as history [Joshua-2 Kings (which is only one book in Hebrew)] and the K (or Ch) from the Writings (which include Psalms, Proverbs, the Wisdom Literature etc. and adding the vowel A in order to be able to pronounce the newly coined word achieved their purpose.
donRedding > 35.	Septuagint--Loy Witherspoon

Its title is derived from a legend that c. 200-250 BCE 70 rabbis independently translated the work into Greek from the Hebrew Text and used precisely the identical Greek words, mirabile dictu!, thereby assuring divine inspiration for the work. Its significance is multiple, but for us Christians it was the Bible for the earliest Christian church, and it was from this work that the authors of our New Testament quoted rather than from the Hebrew Text. This work was translated in Egypt but widely used by Jews throughout the Diaspora-outside Palestine.
donRedding > 36.	Scottish Clan Bible - Cindy Culbreth Withers

When I graduated from Duke, my father’s family Bible was given to me by my great-aunt, Marge in 1977. The Bible, published in 1856, contains genealogical records of my ancestors’ clan Gordon from Scotland with dates of births, marriages and deaths dating back to 1812. Both of my grandfathers attended Duke Divinity in 1923, becoming Methodist ministers serving the NC Eastern and Western Conferences, respectively, during the Great Depression. You will see that the Bible has a concordance and the apocrypha. The delicate etchings are beautiful and inspiring. I’ve found in the pages of the Bible a pressed 4 leaf clover, newspaper clippings about farm land for sate and locks of a child’s hair.
donRedding > 37.	1856 British Bible--Bobbie Phillips

This small 1856 Bible has a velvet cover and brass clasp protecting gold-gilded pages. It contains an Epistle Dedicatory “To the most high and mighty Prince JAMES, by the grace of God, King of Great Britain, France. and Ireland, Defender of the faith &c.”
